"In a budget proposal made public on Wednesday, House Republicans announced plans to zero out all funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the nonprofit responsible for funding public media including NPR, PBS, Pacifica and more."
For me, this isn't about politics. I just love NPR and don't want it to go anywhere. I personally give a huge double-thumbs up to the public interest media sector. It's a resource utilized by millions. Why should we stop funding that?
The excuse they're using is that it needs to be cut because of budget constraints. In actuality, public broadcasting couldn't be any cheaper. That's the idea. That's why they call it public broadcasting. Somehow, they're able to do what they do with only %0.0001 of the federal budget. It's not making a dent. It doesn't need to go.
"Public media is one of the last bulwarks against the corporate media where the combination of consolidation and profit-motive has long since shifted the focused to infotainment rather than substantive news. In many rural and less affluent communities, broadcasters rely on federal funding to provide the only available high-quality news and public affairs programming."
NPR is important to me, because without it, the corporate media monsters will take over. I'm not kidding. They're going to get more of a say (all of it, really) and dictate the information we get via the TV, newspapers, radio, everything. Diversity in the media. We need it.
What can you do? I'm so happy you asked. You can copy/paste the following link and sign the petition. What you're signing is saying that you're down to ask congress to fully defend NPR and PBS.
